Dr. Viet Nga Cao is a Lecturer in the Department of Banking and Finance within Monash Business School at Monash University. Her academic journey began with a Bachelor of Business in Banking and Finance from Monash University, supported by the Australian Government's AusAID scholarship, during which she received several merit-based awards. She then pursued an MSc in Finance and Investment at Durham University, funded by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office Chevening Scholarship, followed by a PhD from Durham University, backed by the Durham University Doctoral Fellowship. Prior to her academic career, she accumulated four years of professional experience in Vietnam's financial sector, serving as an auditor, consultant, and financial analyst with KPMG and Vietcombank Fund Management. She has passed the CFA Level 2 examination and holds membership in the CFA Institute and CFA Society Melbourne.
Dr. Cao joined Monash University in 2011 as a Lecturer in Finance, coming from the University of Edinburgh where she worked while completing her doctoral thesis. Her research specializations encompass asset pricing and corporate finance, focusing on empirical asset pricing, market anomalies, and investment-based asset pricing. She has published in leading journals, including 'Nonstandard errors' in the Journal of Finance (2024, co-authored with A. J. Menkveld and others), 'Behavioral spillover between firms with shared auditors: the monitoring role of capital market investors' in the Journal of Corporate Finance (2021, with A. V. Pham), 'Investment-related anomalies in Australia: evidence and explanations' in the International Review of Financial Analysis (2019, with P. Gray and A. Zhong), and 'What explains the value premium? The case of adjustment costs, operating leverage and financial leverage' in the Journal of Banking and Finance (2015). As primary chief investigator, she led the project 'Earnings Forecast and Stock Recommendation Abilities of CFA Qualified Financial Analysts in the Australian Equity Market,' funded by the Accounting & Finance Association of Australia and New Zealand (2012-2014). For her teaching excellence, she earned the Monash Business School Dean's Teaching Commendation and letters of recognition from the Monash University Vice-President and the Dean of Monash Business School for contributions to student learning.
