Dr. Nicolas Eugster is a Senior Lecturer in Finance at UQ Business School in the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law, University of Queensland. He earned his PhD in Management (Finance) from the University of Fribourg, Switzerland, graduating summa cum laude in 2018, along with a Master of Arts in Accounting and Finance and a Bachelor of Arts in Management from the same university, both with highest honors. He also holds a Diploma of Advanced Studies in Higher Education and Educational Technology from the University of Fribourg. His career includes positions as Lecturer in Finance at UQ from 2020 to 2023, promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2024; Assistant Professor in Finance at IESEG School of Management in Lille, France from 2018 to 2020; and Teaching and Research Assistant at the Chair of Finance and Governance, University of Fribourg from 2012 to 2017. In 2017, he was a visiting research scholar at the Robert H. Smith School of Business, University of Maryland, supported by a Swiss National Science Foundation Doc.Mobility fellowship.
Nicolas Eugster's research focuses on corporate finance, ownership structure, family firms, and dividends. His publications appear in top journals, including 'Family firms and carbon emissions' (Journal of Corporate Finance, 2024, with Borsuk et al.), 'Internal governance mechanisms and corporate misconduct' (International Review of Financial Analysis, 2024, with Kowalewski and Spiewanowski), 'Founding family ownership, stock market returns, and agency problems' (Journal of Banking and Finance, 2019, with Isakov), and 'Chasing dividends during the COVID-19 pandemic' (International Review of Finance, 2022, with Ducret et al.). His work has received media coverage in Handelszeitung and The Conversation. Awards include the 2018 Vigener Prize for the best PhD thesis from the University of Fribourg's Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences. He has obtained grants such as the Macoun Research Scholar Program (AU$30,000, 2022), Start-up Support Funding Scheme (AU$20,000, 2020), and recent Australia-France Social Sciences Collaborative Research Program funding (2025). At UQ, he coordinates finance courses like RBUS4411 and FINM7108, earning outstanding teaching evaluations and nominations for innovation awards.
