Dr. Oya Gumuskaya serves as an Honorary Lecturer in the School of Nursing and Midwifery within the College of Health, Medicine and Wellbeing at the University of Newcastle. She possesses extensive clinical and academic experience in nursing, having obtained nursing registration in Turkey in 2003 and in Australia in 2016. Her career trajectory includes working as a perioperative nurse at Gulhane Military Medical Academy Hospitals in Turkey from 2003 to 2007, research assistant at Istanbul University from 2008 to 2011, lecturer at Istanbul Aydin University from 2015 to 2016, and lecturer at Yeditepe University Faculty of Health Sciences Department of Nursing from 2016 to 2020. Gumuskaya holds a Master’s degree and a PhD in Surgical Nursing from Istanbul University-Cerrahpasa. She has also held a lecturer position at the University of Newcastle from 2020 to 2023 and currently serves as a Senior Lecturer at Western Sydney University School of Nursing and Midwifery, alongside her honorary role at Newcastle.
Gumuskaya’s research centers on perioperative nursing excellence, with dedicated focus on postoperative nausea and vomiting management, pain management, intraoperative team communication, and preoperative preparation. Her publications include 'The effectiveness of preoperative oral carbohydrate loading on postoperative nausea and vomiting in adults receiving total intravenous anaesthesia compared to inhalational anaesthesia: A systematic review and meta-analysis' (2026, Journal of Clinical Anesthesia), 'Perioperative nutrition in older patients: what are the priorities?' (2025, Current Opinion in Clinical Nutrition and Metabolic Care), 'Digital mental health interventions for the mental health care of refugees and asylum seekers: Integrative literature review' (2024, International Journal of Mental Health Nursing), 'Rehabilitation after surgery for hip fracture – the impact of prompt, frequent and mobilisation-focused physiotherapy on discharge outcomes: an observational cohort study' (2024, BMC Geriatrics), and 'The elephant in the room: nurses’ views of communication failure and recommendations for improvement in perioperative care' (2020, AORN Journal). She has engaged in global collaborative research projects and teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses in acute adult care, critical care, and perioperative nursing, fostering student engagement through modern methods and technology. Gumuskaya received the Emerging Perioperative Clinician Researcher Career Development Award in 2023 and the SONM Western Sydney University Research Impact Award in 2025.
