Dr. Patricia Angley served as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of English at the University of Central Florida from 1998 until her passing on September 4, 2020, contributing 22 years to teaching, administration, student advising, and union work within the Literature faculty. A lifelong educator with a 52-year career in English literature and writing, she earned her B.A. from Florida State University in 1968, her M.A. from Northern Michigan University in 1973, and her Ph.D. from the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa in 1998. Her doctoral dissertation, titled “Just Words: Reading Faulkner Writing Women,” examined women in the literary texts of William Faulkner. Prior to joining UCF, Angley taught at Texas Christian University, Christopher Newport College, the College of William and Mary, and the University of Hawai’i.
At UCF, Angley was the Undergraduate Advisor for the English Department and taught courses on Native American literature, the American novel, and Toni Morrison, fostering deep engagement with American literatures through classroom discussions, online forums, and advisory support. She served on numerous committees across university levels and was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2019. In 2012, she received the University Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching from the College of Arts and Humanities. Colleagues regarded her as the heart of the department, integral to student successes and bringing joy to her work environment. The Patricia Angley Memorial Scholarship in English, established in her honor, supports full-time undergraduate English majors demonstrating commitment to the discipline and department.
