Conjoint Professor Patricia Davidson serves as an Honorary Professor in the School of Medicine and Public Health, College of Health, Medicine and Wellbeing, at the University of Newcastle. A registered nurse since 1980, she holds a PhD in Behavioral Sciences from the University of Newcastle (2003), a Master of Education from the University of Wollongong (1993), and early qualifications including a Bachelor of Arts and nursing certificates in general and intensive care. Her distinguished career encompasses clinical practice, academia, and leadership in cardiovascular science, chronic illness management, palliative care, aged care nursing, acute care, and primary health care. Notable appointments include Dean and Professor at the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, Vice-Chancellor at the University of Wollongong (2021-2024), Vice Chancellor's Fellow and Interim Co-Director of the International Centre for Future Health Systems at the University of New South Wales, and Honorary Fellow at the University of Wollongong School of Nursing. She has held fellowships with the American Academy of Nursing (2013), American Heart Association (2013), Preventive Cardiovascular Nurses Association (2013), Australian College of Nursing (2007), and National Heart Foundation of Australia (2018).
Professor Davidson's contributions have earned her major awards such as the 2014 Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Newcastle, 2016 Australian Museum Eureka Prize for Outstanding Mentor of Young Researchers, 2018 Honorary Doctorate from King's College London, and 2019 Fellowship Ad Eundem from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. Her global impact is evident in leadership roles including Secretary General of the World Health Organization's Collaborating Centers for Nursing and Midwifery, Counsel General of the International Council on Women's Health Issues, past Board Member of the Consortium of Universities for Global Health, and current Board Member of Health Care Services for the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. Key publications include 'Is Nursing a STEM Discipline – Does it matter and what can we do about it?' (Journal of Advanced Nursing, 2020), 'Time for a renaissance of the clinical nurse specialist role in critical care?'
