Dr. Patricia Johnson serves as a Senior Lecturer in Tourism within the Newcastle Business School at the University of Newcastle, Australia. She earned her PhD, Bachelor of Business, and Bachelor of Social Science (Honours), all from the University of Newcastle. Johnson's academic career at the university commenced in 2001 as a casual lecturer and tutor in the School of Humanities and Social Science, advancing to Research Academic in 2007, and to her current Senior Lecturer position in the Newcastle Business School since 2010. She has taught courses in tourism studies, media studies, cultural studies, and sociology. Outside academia, Johnson has experience in business management within civil construction and as a consultant assessing the effectiveness of workplace training across various industries.
Employing an interdisciplinary approach informed by humanities and social sciences, Johnson's research examines perceptions and management of risk and security in tourist experiences, ideology, discourse, liminality, cultural capital, the gaze, identity, and difference. Her work addresses cosmopolitanism, cultural literacy, global citizenship, and the discursive construction of culture, with particular expertise in analyzing travel writing and media to reveal Western viewing positions toward the foreign Other. Other research interests include destination development, cruise ship tourism, nautical tourism, stakeholder knowledge transfer processes, volunteerism in urban tourism, recreation specialization, tourist image construction of Papua New Guinea, and wine tourism. Notable publications include "Conceptualising networks in sustainable tourism development" (Tourism Management Perspectives, 2019), "Networking, coopetition and sustainability of tourism destinations" (Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Management, 2022), "Cultural literacy, cosmopolitanism and tourism research" (Annals of Tourism Research, 2014), "Writing liminal landscapes: The cosmopolitical gaze" (Tourism Geographies, 2010), and "Outbound Chinese tourism: looking back and looking forward" (Journal of Policy Research in Tourism, Leisure and Events, 2020). Her publications have accumulated over 650 citations according to Google Scholar. Johnson has received the 2024 College Excellence Award for Global Engagement from the College of Human and Social Futures, the 2018 Vice-Chancellor Award for International Engagement, and the 2018 Faculty of Business and Law Award for International Engagement.
