Patrick J. Loehrer, Sr., MD, is an Indiana University Distinguished Professor, Joseph W. and Jackie J. Cusick Professor of Oncology, HH Gregg Professor of Oncology, and Professor of Medicine in the Division of Hematology/Oncology at the Indiana University School of Medicine. He serves as Associate Dean for Cancer Research and was Director of the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center from 2009 to 2021, during which the center achieved NCI Comprehensive Cancer Center designation. Loehrer earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University in 1975 and an MD from Rush Medical College in 1978. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Rush Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center and his fellowship in medical oncology at Indiana University, joining the School of Medicine faculty in 1983. Affiliated with the Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health as DrPH faculty in Community and Global Health, he holds leadership roles including Program Leader in Global Oncology.
A leading medical oncologist, Loehrer specializes in testicular, bladder, colon, pancreatic, and thymic malignancies. His research advanced ifosfamide to FDA approval and earned the Exceptional Service Award from the Foundation for Thymic Research for thymic cancer studies. As founding chair of the Hoosier Oncology Group (now Hoosier Cancer Research Network) for two decades, he oversaw clinical trials enrolling over 5,000 patients in 20 countries. In global oncology, Loehrer founded the AMPATH-Oncology Program in western Kenya, treating over 8,000 cancer patients annually, screening over 1,500 women monthly for breast and cervical cancers, and serving as co-PI on a U54 NIH grant for HPV studies in East Africa. He chairs the National Cancer Institute Clinical Trials Advisory Committee, previously served on boards of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, ECOG Foundation, American Board of Internal Medicine, and American Association of Cancer Institutes, and delivered public lectures such as 'Thymoma: Current Status and Future Directions' in 2024. Major awards include the ASCO Humanitarian Award (2023), Allen S. Lichter Visionary Leader Award (2017), John W. Ryan Award (2026), Indiana University Bicentennial Medal, Purdue University Outstanding Mechanical Engineering Award, and Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award. His contributions encompass over 350 publications, including 'The Integrated Genomic Landscape of Thymic Epithelial Tumors' (2018) and 'Bilateral Orchiectomy with or without Flutamide for Metastatic Prostate Cancer' (NEJM, 1998), with more than 26,900 citations.
