About Paul

Professor Paul Bartholomew serves as Vice-Chancellor of Ulster University, a position he has held since his appointment in 2020 following an interim role that began in February of that year. In this capacity, he leads on all aspects of university business at an institution with a dual focus on excellent teaching and research across multiple campuses. Prior to entering higher education in 2001, Professor Bartholomew pursued a clinical career in the NHS as a diagnostic radiographer. He has since held leadership roles focused on learning and teaching, as well as the enhancement of academic quality.

Professor Bartholomew is a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, a National Teaching Fellow since 2004, and a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences since 2017. His academic interests encompass curriculum design, academic quality, technology-enhanced learning, student engagement, and academic professional development. His research has centred on video-based discourse analysis, computer-supported collaborative learning, and academic professionalism. He has taught on undergraduate and postgraduate diagnostic radiography programmes as well as postgraduate programmes in academic staff development, including MEd and EdD courses. Professor Bartholomew has contributed to national groups, including TEF panels, and has authored or co-authored publications such as the 2018 book New Innovations in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education, along with chapters on topics including institutional approaches to curriculum design, transnational academic staff development, and assessment in higher education. In 2026, he was awarded a CBE for services to higher education.
