Professor Paul Burke is Head of the Arndt-Corden Department of Economics and a Professor at the Crawford School of Public Policy, Australian National University, where he also serves as Deputy Director and Acting Education Director. He earned a Bachelor of Agricultural Economics (Honours I) from the University of Sydney in 2004 and a PhD in Economics from the Australian National University in 2010. Burke's career at ANU encompasses teaching, research supervision, and leadership in public policy education. He teaches IDEC8029 Issues in Applied Microeconomics and has delivered executive education training in microeconomics, environmental economics, energy economics, and related fields to public sector and open-enrolment participants. He has chaired PhD panels for five graduated students and contributes to major projects including the Indonesia Project Phase V, ANU Grand Challenge Zero Carbon for the Asia Pacific, and the Australia-Germany Energy Transition Hub.
Burke's research specializations are energy economics, environmental economics, transport economics, and development economics, with emphasis on Asia-Pacific economies. His ongoing work examines Australia's electricity sector and energy transitions in South-East Asia. He has produced 94 research outputs, publishing in prestigious journals such as American Economic Journal: Macroeconomics, Economic Inquiry, Nature Geoscience, Nature Climate Change, Energy, and Global Environmental Change. Key recent publications include 'Temperature-Induced Residential Air Conditioning Adoption and Its Effect on Electricity Use in China' with Teng et al. (Energy Journal, 2026), 'Fuel Prices and Ambient Air Pollution: A Study of Sydney' with Li (Economic Record, 2025), 'Effectiveness of Electric Vehicle Subsidies in China: A Three-Dimensional Panel Study' with Zhang and Wang (Resource and Energy Economics, 2024), and 'Effects of Low Emission Zones on Air Quality, New Vehicle Registrations, and Birthweights: Evidence from Japan' with Nishitateno (Environmental and Resource Economics, 2024). Burke is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia (FASSA, elected 2024) and Distinguished Fellow of the Australasian Agricultural and Resource Economics Society. He serves as Associate Editor of Asian-Pacific Economic Literature and Editorial Board Member of the Bulletin of Indonesian Economic Studies.
