About Paul

Dr Paul Taylor is St Luke’s Senior Clinical Lecturer in Palliative Medicine in the School of Medicine and Population Health at the University of Sheffield. He is a Palliative Medicine physician working at St Luke’s Hospice in Sheffield, where he has six years of consultant experience. During his specialist training he completed a PhD in Health Sciences at Hull and York Medical School, awarded in 2012. He moved to Sheffield in 2017 as Senior Clinical Lecturer to develop his research interests and lead St Luke’s research strategy. He divides his time between clinical work at the hospice, the University of Sheffield, and additional support to Sheffield Teaching Hospitals when required.

Dr Taylor’s research interests centre on prognostication and clinical decision-making in end-of-life care. He has contributed to projects including EnComPaSS and Project ECHO at St Luke’s, collaborated on the Yorkshire Cancer Research-funded RESOLVE study and the NIHR StOIC study on opioid-induced constipation, and undertaken research on avoiding emergency admissions in palliative patients funded by the Sheffield Health Care Challenges Collaboration. His publications include studies on physiological changes in the last weeks of life, clinical decision-making at the end of life, palliative care in emergency departments, and evaluations of education programmes such as Project ECHO for paramedics and care workers. He holds MB ChB and PhD qualifications and is on the General Medical Council Specialist Register.
