Peter Drysdale is Emeritus Professor of Economics and Head of the East Asian Bureau of Economic Research and Editor-in-Chief of East Asia Forum at the Crawford School of Public Policy, Australian National University. He holds a BA and M from the University of New England and a PhD from the Australian National University. His research specializations encompass Asia Pacific economic integration, international trade and economic policy, Japanese economy and economic policy, foreign direct investment, and East Asia’s and China’s trade and transformation. Widely recognised as the leading intellectual architect of APEC, Drysdale has authored and edited numerous works on these topics, contributing significantly to understanding economic policy in East Asia and the Pacific.
Drysdale's key publications include the prize-winning book International Economic Pluralism: Economic Policy in East Asia and the Pacific (1988), as well as edited volumes such as The New Economy in East Asia and the Pacific (2004), Japanese Governance: Beyond Japan Inc. (2003), Reform and Recovery in East Asia: The Role of the State and Economic Enterprise (2000), and Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation: Critical Perspectives on the World Economy (2007, Volumes 1-5). He has also published influential papers, including 'Technological Catch-Up and Productivity Growth in East Asia' (1997, Economic Record), 'Regionalism in Asia and the Pacific: An Asian Economic Community' (2008), 'Creating an architecture for cooperation' (2006), and 'Did the NARA Treaty make a difference?' (2006, Australian Journal of International Affairs). Additionally, he has edited series such as Asia Pacific Economic Papers, including issues on China and East Asian Energy (2007-2008). His contributions extend to editorial roles and policy coherence discussions in OECD publications. Drysdale's honours include the Asia Pacific Prize, Weary Dunlop Award, Japanese Order of the Rising Sun with Gold Rays and Neck Ribbon, Australian Centenary Medal, and membership in the Order of Australia.
