Distinguished Professor Sir Peter Hunter KNZM FRS FRSNZ is the founder and director of the Auckland Bioengineering Institute at the University of Auckland. He completed an engineering degree in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics at the University of Auckland in 1971 and earned a DPhil in Physiology from the University of Oxford. Hunter has held the position of Director of the Auckland Bioengineering Institute since its establishment and serves as co-director of Computational Physiology at the University of Oxford. His research focuses on computational modelling of human organs and physiological systems.
Hunter was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand in 1994 and a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2006. He received the Rutherford Medal in 2009 and was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2010, later promoted to Knight Companion in 2024. He is a pioneer in the development of mathematical models for simulating human physiology, including heart modelling and digital twin technologies. Hunter maintains an active role in advancing bioengineering research and has contributed to major initiatives in computational physiology.
