About Peter

Professor Sir Peter Mathieson is the Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Edinburgh, a position he has held since February 2018. He previously served as the 15th President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hong Kong from 2014 to 2018. A physician by training, he qualified with First Class Honours in Medicine from the University of London in 1983 after studying at the London Hospital Medical College. He obtained a PhD from the University of Cambridge in 1992 and went on to become the foundation Professor of Renal Medicine at the University of Bristol in 1995, where he also served as Honorary Consultant Nephrologist at North Bristol NHS Trust. At Bristol, he held roles including Head of the University Department of Clinical Science at North Bristol, Director of Research and Development for the North Bristol NHS Trust, and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. He was elected President of the Renal Association in 2007, serving a three-year term, and remains an Honorary Professor of Medicine at the Universities of Bristol and Hong Kong.

Mathieson was born and educated in the United Kingdom and was the first in his family to attend university. His research has focused on autoimmune renal diseases, including glomerulonephritis, systemic vasculitis, and systemic lupus erythematosus, with contributions to the study of podocytes, glomerular endothelial cells, and factors in proteinuria. He has received numerous honors, including election as a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 1999, Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of London since 1998, and Fellowship of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 2021. He was knighted in 2023 for services to higher education. He has held leadership positions on various boards and committees, including the Russell Group Board and the Scottish Funding Council Board.
