Dr. Peter M. McCoy is Professor of Music Education at the Crane School of Music, State University of New York College at Potsdam, where he serves as Chair of Music Education and Coordinator of Music Technology. He earned a Bachelor of Music Education from Iowa State University, followed by a Master of Music and Ph.D. from Northwestern University. Throughout his career, McCoy has taught in public and private schools and has performed, conducted, and adjudicated nationally since 1985. His teaching focuses on music technology, instrumental music, and general music, preparing students for diverse roles in music education through practical and innovative approaches.
As a dedicated educator and leader, McCoy co-directs the Crane Latin Ensemble, guiding students in high-energy Afro-Cuban music performances, including international trips to Cuba and collaborations with guest artists. He is a regular presenter and clinician at conferences on key topics in the field, such as technology in music education, classroom-based composing, and portfolio development. McCoy holds memberships in several professional organizations, including the International Trombone Association, National Association for Music Education, International Society for Music Education, College Music Society, Center for Black Music Research, and Technology Institute for Music Educators. In recognition of his commitment to equity, he established the Racial Justice and Equity Scholarship for rising juniors and seniors at SUNY Potsdam who demonstrate advocacy for social justice. His contributions enhance music education by integrating technology, performance, and cultural exploration, fostering comprehensive musical understanding among students.
