Dr. Peter Selby is the Giblon Professor and Vice-Chair of Research in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto, where he also serves as Head of the Division of Mental Health and Addiction. He holds cross-appointments as Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and the Dalla Lana School of Public Health. Dr. Selby earned his MBBS, CCFP, FCFP, MHSc, dipABAM, and DFASAM credentials and is a Senior Scientist and Senior Medical Consultant at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), where he directs the INTREPID Lab. His research specializes in addiction medicine, with a focus on tobacco dependence, digital health interventions, implementation science, technology-enabled collaborative care, and learning health systems. He has led major initiatives including the STOP (Smoking Treatment for Ontario Patients) program and the TEACH training program, securing over $85 million in grants from sources such as CIHR, NIH, and the Ontario Ministry of Health.
Dr. Selby has received numerous honors, including the 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award in Addictions Medicine from the Canadian Society of Addiction Medicine, the 2019 Dave Davis Research Award from the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine, the 2017 Educator of the Year Award from the American Society of Addiction Medicine, and earlier distinctions such as the 2012 Physician Achievement Award from the Ontario Medical Association Section on Addiction Medicine. Key publications include “Tobacco Addiction” in the New England Journal of Medicine (2022) and contributions to studies on neonatal abstinence syndrome and pragmatic smoking cessation trials. He has held leadership roles including Chair of the Medical Education Council for the American Society of Addiction Medicine and continues to supervise graduate students and postdoctoral fellows while advancing evidence-based interventions for addictive disorders and comorbidities.
