Peter Stopher is Emeritus Professor at the Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies (ITLS) within the University of Sydney Business School. He held the position of Professor of Transport Planning at ITLS from 2001 to 2016. Prior to this appointment, Stopher served as Professor of Civil Engineering and Director of the Louisiana Transportation Research Center at Louisiana State University until the end of 2000. His academic career also encompasses faculty positions at Northwestern University as Professor and Associate Professor of Civil Engineering, Associate Professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering at Cornell University, and a position at McMaster University. Between 1980 and 1991, he engaged in transport planning consulting, initially based in Miami and later in Los Angeles on the Metro Rail project. Earlier, following his degrees, he worked for 18 months in the Highways and Transportation Department of the Greater London Council. Stopher holds a PhD in Traffic Studies from the University of London and degrees in Civil and Municipal Engineering.
Stopher's research focuses on transportation planning, human behavior surveys, GPS applications in travel data collection, and passive survey methods. His Google Scholar profile shows over 10,000 citations. Notable publications include 'Service quality––developing a service quality index in the provision of commercial bus contracts' with D.A. Hensher and P. Bullock (Transportation Research Part A: Policy and Practice, 2003, 740 citations), 'Household travel surveys: Where are we going?' with S.P. Greaves (Transportation Research Part A: Policy and Practice, 2007, 518 citations), 'Review of GPS travel survey and GPS data-processing methods' with L. Shen (Transport Reviews, 2014, 480 citations), 'Assessing the accuracy of the Sydney Household Travel Survey with GPS' with C. FitzGerald and M. Xu (Transportation, 2007, 419 citations), and 'Search for a global positioning system device to measure person travel' with C. FitzGerald and J. Zhang (Transportation Research Part C: Emerging Technologies, 2008, 361 citations). He co-authored the book 'Introduction to Transport Policy: A Public Policy View' (2014) and has contributed extensively to transport survey methodologies, travel time budgets, and environmental justice in transport.
