Philippe B. Laval, Ph.D., serves as Emeritus Associate Professor of Mathematics at Kennesaw State University, where he dedicated over 25 years to teaching, research, and administration from September 1994 until his retirement in July 2020. In his prominent roles, he functioned as Associate Professor of Mathematics, Assistant Chair of the Mathematics Department, and Mathematics Program Coordinator. These positions enabled him to play a key part in shaping the department's curriculum, program coordination, and overall leadership within the College of Science and Mathematics. Laval earned his Ph.D. in Mathematics from Emory University, providing a strong foundation for his academic pursuits.
His research focuses on applied mathematics, with particular emphasis on cancer modeling and medical imaging, alongside expertise in computer science related to image processing. This interdisciplinary work highlights applications of mathematical techniques to real-world problems in healthcare and computation. A representative publication is "Fusion-Net: Integration of Dimension Reduction and Deep Learning Neural Network for Image Classification," co-authored with Mohammad Masum in 2020 and hosted on DigitalCommons@Kennesaw State University. Furthermore, Laval has demonstrated commitment to student engagement through funded research projects, such as the CSM Research Student Program grant in 2016. In education, he developed innovative Java applets serving as learning tools for College Algebra, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus, enhancing interactive learning experiences for students. He has also contributed to the academic community by participating in the KSU Faculty Senate during AY 2016-2017 and presenting at events like the Kennesaw Mountain Undergraduate Mathematics Conference, including a talk titled "Mathematics meets Oncology" in 2011. Laval's multifaceted contributions underscore his impact on mathematics education and applied research at Kennesaw State University.
