Raymond Alvarez, DHA, MPA, FACHE, is a distinguished Professor of Healthcare Management at Fairmont State University, serving as Director of the Master of Science in Healthcare Management program and overseeing both undergraduate and graduate programs in the field. With more than 40 years of professional experience in healthcare leadership—including positions in rural and urban hospitals, outpatient specialty centers, home-based services, post-acute care, project development, grants management, strategy, and business development—Alvarez transitioned from a career as a healthcare executive to academia in 2019. A Fairmont native, he has significantly shaped the university's offerings by developing specialized curricula in post-acute care management, forging partnerships with the West Virginia Nursing Home Administrators Licensing Board to streamline licensure pathways for students.
Appointed by Governor Jim Justice to the West Virginia Nursing Home Administrators Licensing Board in 2021 and reappointed in 2024 through June 2029, Alvarez contributes to regulating long-term care administration in the state. Beyond healthcare, he holds the title of Official Historian for Fairmont and Marion County, with 18 articles published in the West Virginia Department of Culture and History’s Goldenseal Magazine covering topics such as Civil War history, the coal industry, influential women, and Marion County’s first civil rights case, Meade v. Johnson (1866). His scholarly output includes books like Fairmont Normal School: Recalling People and Places, 1868-1916, and presentations on local African American experiences. A published author and conference presenter on healthcare management topics including quality outcomes and staffing, Alvarez integrates historical elements into his teaching, enhancing student engagement and cultural awareness.
