About Renuka

Professor Renuka Vithal is an Emeritus Professor in Mathematics Education in the Faculty of Education at the University of Fort Hare. She joined the university in 2019 and served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Teaching and Learning until her retirement in 2025, following an earlier role as Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs from 2019 to 2021. Prior to her appointments at Fort Hare, she held senior positions at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, including Founding Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Teaching and Learning from 2008 to 2017, Founding Dean of the Faculty of Education from 2005 to 2008, and Full Professor in Mathematics Education from 2005 to 2017. She also served as Honorary Professor in Mathematics Education at the University of the Witwatersrand from 2018 to 2021 and as Doctoral Programme Director at the Management College of Southern Africa from 2018 to 2019. Her academic career began as a high school mathematics teacher before progressing through lecturer, senior lecturer, and associate professor roles at the University of Durban-Westville, where she also directed the School of Educational Studies and coordinated the doctoral programme.

Professor Vithal holds a BA with Distinction in Mathematics, a BA Honours, a Higher Diploma in Education with Distinction, and a BEd Honours cum laude, all from the University of KwaZulu-Natal. She earned an MPhil in Mathematics Education from the University of Cambridge and a Doctoral Degree in Natural Sciences from Aalborg University in Denmark, which later awarded her an honorary doctorate. An internationally recognised National Research Foundation B2-rated scholar and member of the Academy of Science of South Africa, she has published over 90 works on mathematics education, teacher education, and higher education, with a focus on the social, cultural, and political dimensions of the field. During her tenure at Fort Hare, she led major academic restructuring initiatives, including the Review of the Academic Enterprise Implementation Project and large-scale faculty recruitment, and spearheaded outreach programmes that improved mathematics pass rates in local schools through teacher workshops and resource provision. She also contributed to the development of new academic programmes, including South Africa’s first Bachelor of Science in Dairy Science and Technology.
