About Richard

Richard G. Bach, MD, FACC, is a Professor of Medicine in the Cardiovascular Division at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. He received a B.S. in Biological Sciences from Georgetown University in 1977 and an M.D. from New York University School of Medicine in 1984. Bach completed his internal medicine residency at NYU School of Medicine in 1987 and fellowships in cardiology research (1988), clinical cardiology (1990), and cardiac catheterization and angioplasty (1991) at New York University Medical Center/Bellevue Hospital. He is board-certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, and interventional cardiology. Currently, he directs the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Center at Washington University, the latter recognized as a Center of Excellence by the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Association—the only such center in the St. Louis region.

Bach's research interests include phenotypic heterogeneity in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and genotype-phenotype relationships, novel diagnostics for at-risk individuals, therapeutic interventions' effects on coronary and myocardial physiology in obstructive HCM, and management of coronary artery disease and acute coronary syndromes. His clinical practice focuses on interventional cardiology, including coronary angioplasty, stenting, alcohol septal ablation for HCM, and cardiac critical care. He has published extensively, with over 12,800 citations, including key papers such as "A Deep Learning Model to Guide Personalized Mechanical Circulatory Support Use in Cardiogenic Shock Patients Undergoing PCI" (JACC: Advances, 2026), analyses from the EXPLORER-HCM and VALOR-HCM trials on mavacamten (2025), and an editorial in JAMA (2023). Bach's contributions have advanced HCM management and interventional cardiology. Awards include the 2023 Cardiology Teacher of the Year from internal medicine residents, the 2025 Neville Grant Award for Clinical Excellence, the Benico Barzilai Teaching Award from cardiology fellows, and selection to the 2024 Top Doctors list by St. Louis Magazine.
