Rate My Professor Rick Qi

Dr. Lintao (Rick) Qi is Senior Lecturer and Course Director of the Master of Interpreting and Translation Studies in the School of Languages, Literatures, Cultures and Linguistics, Faculty of Arts at Monash University. He completed his PhD at Monash University in 2015 on English translations of Jin Ping Mei: Texts, Paratexts, and Contexts, for which he received the CIUTI Award for the Most Outstanding PhD Dissertation in 2018. As a NAATI-certified translator (Chinese <> English), Qi serves on the National Education Committee of the Australian Institute of Interpreters and Translators (AUSIT). His editorial roles include Editor of The AALITRA Review, Co-editor of New Voices in Translation Studies, and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Homosexuality from March 2023. Qi has been recognized with the Australian Academy of Humanities Travelling Fellowship in May 2018, the LLCL Outstanding Early Career Researcher Award in 2018, Faculty of Arts Teaching and Learning Awards and Citations in 2020, and a visiting scholar position at Fudan University in December 2019.

Qi’s research focuses on literary translation, translation and cultural diplomacy, censorship and sexuality in translation, translation in the digital space, literary translation and adaptation studies, language services for culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities, mobility, translation and cultural identities. Key publications include his monograph Jin Ping Mei English Translations: Texts, Paratexts, and Contexts (Routledge, 2018). He co-edited A Century of Chinese Literature in Translation: English Publication and Reception with Leah Gerber (Routledge, 2020), Encountering China's Past: Translation and Dissemination of Classical Chinese Literature with Shani Tobias (Springer, 2022), and Jin Ping Mei – A Wild Horse in Chinese Literature: Essays on Texts, Illustrations and Translations of a Late Sixteenth-Century Masterpiece with Vibeke Børdahl (NIAS, 2023). Qi has published articles in journals such as Adaptation, Target, Translation and Interpreting Studies, and Perspectives, contributing significantly to translation studies through his examination of classical Chinese literature dissemination and translation politics.
