About Robert

Robert Davidson is Senior Lecturer in Composition in the School of Music at the University of Queensland. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy from the UQ School of Music, completed in 2001 with a folio of compositions and critical commentary, and a Bachelor degree from the University of Queensland. He studied composition with Terry Riley in California and New York, and spent a year in India studying the dance-drama traditions of Kerala. A prolific composer, bassist, and lecturer, Davidson founded and serves as artistic director of Topology, the ensemble-in-residence at Brisbane Powerhouse and a Key Organisation funded by the Australia Council. With Topology, he has released twelve albums and a DVD, touring internationally to venues such as New York's Lincoln Center, London's Barbican Centre, Queensland Music Festival, Brisbane Festival, Sydney Festival, Olympics Arts Festival, and Canberra International Music Festival.

Davidson's research specializations include stylistic pluralism, intersections between music and language, improvisation, modelling musical intelligence, qualitative studies of creativity and collaboration, and practice-based research. He has authored key publications such as the journal article 'The role of negative emotions in learning music: qualitative understanding of Australian undergraduate students’ listening experience of unfamiliar music' (2023, British Journal of Music Education, with Koji Matsunobu and Khin Yee Lo), 'How do music activities affect health and well-being? A scoping review of studies examining psychosocial mechanisms' (2021, Frontiers in Psychology, with Genevieve A. Dingle et al.), ''It makes you think anything is possible': representing diversity in music theory pedagogy' (2016, British Journal of Music Education, with Mandy Lupton), and book chapters 'Music literacies: Teaching diversity' (2014, Literacy in the arts: Retheorising learning and teaching) and 'Collaborating across musical style boundaries' (2014, Collaborative creative thought and practice in music). Over 199 compositions include recent works like 'The sound of symmetry' (2024, with Denis Collins, Artem Pulemotov, and Topology), 'Electric counterpoint' (2025), 'Numinbah afternoon: for string orchestra' (2022), 'Diary pages' (2021), 'Round roads: for symphony orchestra' (2021), and multimedia 'Stalin's Piano' (2018-2019, with Sonya Lifschitz). All Australia's professional orchestras and leading soloists have commissioned and performed his music. He convenes the Bachelor of Arts Music Major, affiliates with the Research Centre in Creative Arts and Human Flourishing, and collaborates with artists including Geoffrey Rush, The Brodsky Quartet, Kate Miller-Heidke, Katie Noonan, Ed Kuepper, and TaikOz.
