Great Professor!
Professor Robin B. Gasser is a Redmond Barry Distinguished Professor and Head of the Department of Veterinary Biosciences at the Melbourne Veterinary School, Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences, University of Melbourne. He joined the University of Melbourne in 1990 and has held continuous academic positions there since. Gasser's academic background includes a veterinary degree from the University of Bern in 1984, Dr. med. vet. from the University of Zurich, PhD from the University of Melbourne, and DVSc from the University of Melbourne. He is a Diplomate of the European Veterinary Parasitology College (DipEVPC), Fellow of the Australian Society for Microbiology (FASM), and Fellow of the Australian Society for Parasitology (FASP).
Gasser's research specializes in veterinary parasitology, employing advanced molecular, genomic, bioinformatic, and transcriptomic approaches to elucidate the biology of socioeconomically important parasites, their interactions with hosts, and the diseases they cause. His pioneering work has generated deep insights into parasite genomes and functions, identifying novel targets for antiparasitic drugs and underpinning the creation of innovative diagnostics, treatments, and control measures for parasitic diseases in animals and humans, with applications leading to commercialization. Key publications include the influential review article 'Molecular tools—advances, opportunities and prospects' published in Veterinary Parasitology in 2006, and his role as editor of the comprehensive volume 'Haemonchus Contortus and Haemonchosis – Past, Present and Future Trends' (Academic Press, 2016). Gasser's contributions have positioned him as a global leader in molecular veterinary parasitology. Major honors include election as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science (FAA) in 2021, appointment as Redmond Barry Distinguished Professor by the University of Melbourne in 2017, and recognition through various grants such as ARC Linkage Projects.
