Associate Professor Rodney Genga serves as Assistant Dean for Strategic Projects in the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment at the University of the Witwatersrand. He also directs the Academic Development Unit, where he has progressed through multiple roles including tutor, faculty interactive teaching technology coordinator, students at risk coordinator, and lecturer. His work in engineering education and academic development spans more than ten years, focusing on inclusive, data-informed systems that support teaching and learning across the faculty.
Professor Genga holds a BSc and a PhD from the University of the Witwatersrand, along with qualifications as FSAIMM and Candidate Engineer. He is an Associate Professor of Materials Science and Manufacturing Engineering, with research interests in cermets, carbides, laser technology, and strong metallic alloys. In addition to his academic appointments, he leads interdisciplinary initiatives in energy transition, water management, and digital transformation. He serves as President of the Microscopy Society of Southern Africa and co-founder of the Africa Inclusive Microscopy Network. Professor Genga received the Wits Vice-Chancellor’s Teaching Award and acts as the Wits-SAHLI design team lead on projects such as the new hydrogen plant. His contributions advance sustainable manufacturing and engineering education in Africa.
