Roxana Marachi is a Professor of Education at San José State University in the Connie L. Lurie College of Education. She teaches courses in the Department of Teacher Education and the Doctoral Program in Educational Leadership. Marachi earned her Ph.D. in Education and Psychology and M.A. in Developmental Psychology from the University of Michigan, along with a B.S. in Psychology, minor in Music, from the University of Washington.
Marachi's research publications have focused on evaluations of policies and programs related to school violence prevention, high-stakes testing, privatization, and the technologization of teaching and learning. Her current interests center on strategies for the prevention of data harms and bridging research-to-practice gaps in the integration of emerging technologies in education. Key publications include "The case of Canvas: Longitudinal datafication through learning management systems" (2020, co-authored with L. Quill, Teaching in Higher Education), "School safety interventions: Best practices and programs" (2005, co-authored with R.A. Astor et al., Children & Schools), "Goals, goal structures, and patterns of adaptive learning" (2014, co-authored with C. Midgley, Routledge), "Effects of teacher avoidance of school policies on student victimization" (2007, co-authored with R.A. Astor and R. Benbenishty, School Psychology International), "Effects of student participation and teacher support on victimization in Israeli schools" (2007, co-authored with R.A. Astor and R. Benbenishty, Journal of Youth and Adolescence), and contributions to "Social workers' desk reference" (2009, Oxford University Press) and "Youth suicide and bullying: Challenges and strategies for prevention and intervention" (2015). These works have informed policy and practice in school safety, educational psychology, and technology integration.
Marachi is a fellow of the National Education Policy Center and served as education chair of the CA/HI State NAACP from 2019 to 2021. She has participated in local, state, and national efforts to strengthen and protect public education.
