Great Professor!
Associate Professor Russell Bush serves in the Sydney School of Veterinary Science at the University of Sydney, where he holds qualifications including BScAgr (Hons I), PhD in Veterinary Science, and Graduate Certificate in Higher Education, all obtained from the University of Sydney. Prior to his academic career, he spent the first 33 years working in the beef, wool, and sheep industries, advancing from hands-on farm management to senior industry positions. Transitioning to academia, he joined the University of Sydney as Senior Lecturer in Livestock Production in November 2005, later promoted to Associate Professor. This role enables him to continue contributing to livestock sectors through research, teaching, and extension efforts focused on sustainable production systems.
Bush's research centers on livestock production and health, particularly enhancing smallholder farming in Southeast Asia, including Laos and Cambodia, to improve food security, biosecurity, and disease management. His studies address transboundary diseases such as African Swine Fever and foot-and-mouth disease, reproductive performance in cattle and buffalo, and innovations like molasses nutrient blocks and Spirulina platensis supplementation for meat quality and growth in goats and buffalo. He has authored over 140 publications, with notable works including 'Disease outbreak data to inform decision-making: the role of disease spread models in the Lao P.D.R. African Swine Fever epidemic, 2019' (2025), 'Foot-and-mouth disease seroprevalence and reporting behaviours in nine northern provinces in Lao PDR: The current situation and challenges for control' (2021), 'Effect of Spirulina platensis Supplementation on Carcass Characteristics, Fatty Acid Profile, and Meat Quality of Omani Goats' (2023), 'Daytime Paddock Behaviour of Alpacas Raised in an Australian Extensive Production System: A Pilot Study' (2025), and 'Provision of High-Quality Molasses Blocks to Improve Productivity of Swamp Buffalo in Lao PDR' (2020). As Project Leader for ACIAR-funded initiatives like AH/2012/067 'Enhancing transboundary livestock disease risk management in Lao PDR', his contributions extend to farmer training, para-veterinarian capacity building, and policy impacts on rural livelihoods. Bush also engages in teaching livestock production courses and acts as Academic Advisor for placements and industry partnerships, fostering practical skills in veterinary science students.
