About Russell

Dr Russell Manfield serves as Senior Lecturer and Entrepreneur-in-Residence in the Strategy and Entrepreneurship Discipline of the School of Business at the University of Queensland Business School, within the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Queensland, awarded in 2016 for his thesis titled "Organizational resilience: a dynamic capabilities approach," and a mechanical engineering degree from the same institution. His early career involved working as a mechanical engineer in the mining and telecommunications sectors, after which he founded new ventures in technology, agri-tech, and workplace training domains. In addition to his lecturing role, Manfield is the Academic-in-Residence at UQ Ventures and an Associate Investigator for the ARC Centre of Excellence for Engineered Quantum Systems (EQUS), a collaborative centre anchored at UQ with nodes at ANU, USyd, Macquarie, and UWA.

Manfield's research specializations encompass innovation strategy, particularly how strategies emerge from innovative approaches to outlier conditions and emerging quantum technologies; entrepreneurial opportunities, focusing on their formation or discovery leading to capable new ventures in historically overlooked social sectors, developing economies, and emerging technologies; and design thinking pedagogy for embracing uncertainty in creating sustainable solutions. He delivers courses in entrepreneurship, innovation, and strategy, and has created online courses on corporate innovation, service innovation culture, innovation strategy for quantum technology, and navigating 21st-century work skills. Notable publications include "Resilience as an entrepreneurial capability: integrating insights from a cross-disciplinary comparison" (2018, International Journal of Entrepreneurial Behavior & Research), "Escaping the collapse trap: Remaining capable without capabilities" (2015, Strategic Change), "Heuristics to survive firm collapse" (2019, Academy of Management Proceedings), "Educating decision makers on resource allocations for quantum technologies" (2023), and "Bicycles for the mind: how GenAI was used to enhance critical thinking in the classroom" (2025, book chapter). He has supervised completions such as an MPhil on embracing entrepreneurship in the informal economy (2024) and principal advises a PhD on entrepreneurial orientation and learning programmes for female entrepreneurs in Oman.
