Dr Ryan Causby is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Allied Health and Human Performance, College of Health, at Adelaide University. He previously served as the Program Director for one of Australia's leading Podiatry programs at the University of South Australia. Causby holds a Doctor of Philosophy (2011–2015), Master of Podiatry (2005–2010), Graduate Diploma of Podiatry (1999–2003), and Bachelor of Health Science (Podiatry) (1995–1997), all obtained from the University of South Australia. His clinical career includes positions as Senior Podiatrist at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, Manager of Podiatry at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, and providing remote podiatry services covering over 70% of South Australia in collaboration with the Royal Flying Doctor Service. He has also worked with Aboriginal communities in Australia and provided services in Kiribati and Cambodia.
Causby's research focuses on allied health rehabilitation science, podiatry, clinical biomechanics, neuroscience of motor learning, musculoskeletal disorders, and diabetes foot complications. Ongoing projects examine soft tissue changes and brain-related alterations in diabetes affecting the foot, decision-making processes for non-emergency diabetes-related amputations, and assessment methods for students in work-integrated learning. He has published more than 30 peer-reviewed journal articles and 5 book chapters. Key publications include: "Consensus-based statements for assessing clinical competency in podiatry-related work integrated learning" (Causby et al., 2023, Journal of Foot and Ankle Research); "'Leaving the door open': Perspectives on decision-making for non-emergency diabetes-related amputation" (Ong et al., 2024, Health Expectations); "Decision-making processes for non-emergency diabetes-related lower extremity amputations: a scoping review" (Ong et al., 2023, Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice); and "Reliability of ultrasound in evaluating the plantar skin and fat pad of the foot in the setting of diabetes" (Morrison et al., 2021, PLOS ONE). Causby has supervised one PhD, one Masters, and ten Honours students to completion. He has received several awards for his contributions to teaching and community engagement, including the 2022 Australian Award for University Teaching Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning, UniSA Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning (2020), and UniSA Chancellor’s Awards for Community Engagement (2017, 2012). He also served as a member of the Academic Board at the University of South Australia from 2023 to 2025.
