About Ryotaro

Ryotaro Hashizume is a Lecturer at Mie University Graduate School of Medicine in the Department of Pathology and Matrix Biology. He holds an MD and a PhD, with the latter awarded by Nagoya University in 2012. Hashizume previously served as Assistant Professor in the same department at Mie University from April 2012 to May 2021 before advancing to his current lecturer position. His academic career includes research conducted in the field of regenerative medicine in both Japan and the United States.

Hashizume’s specialized areas are pathology, genetics, and regenerative medicine. He is a member of the Unit for Genomic Manipulation and Technology Development at Mie University. His current research focuses on basic studies aimed at the clinical implementation of gene expression regulation and chromosome manipulation techniques, as well as genome-level pathological and clinical genetic studies. In 2025, Hashizume led a research team that developed a CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing technique to selectively remove the extra copy of chromosome 21 from cells derived from individuals with Down syndrome, achieving correction rates up to 37.5 percent. The approach was shown to restore normal gene expression patterns, cell proliferation rates, and antioxidant capacity in the edited cells, and it proved effective in both differentiated fibroblasts and non-dividing cells. This work represents a significant advancement in addressing trisomy 21 at the chromosomal level.
