S. K. Ramesh is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at California State University, Northridge (CSUN), serving in the College of Engineering and Computer Science. He currently directs the Secure for Student Success (SfS²) program, previously known as AIMS², a multi-institutional initiative funded by multi-million-dollar U.S. Department of Education grants to support underrepresented minorities in engineering and computer science. Ramesh earned his B.E. (Honors) in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Regional Engineering College, Tiruchirapalli, University of Madras, India, in 1981; M.S.E.E. in 1983; and Ph.D. in 1986, both from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. His research specializations encompass high-speed terabit-per-second optical communication systems, fiber optic communications, devices, and electronic circuit design.
From 2006 to 2017, Ramesh was Dean of CSUN's College of Engineering and Computer Science, doubling enrollment to over 4,900 students across five departments, recruiting more than 35 new faculty members, establishing interdisciplinary centers in energy research, entrepreneurship and innovation, and developing a Master’s degree in Assistive Technology Engineering. Previously, he served as Professor of Electrical Engineering and Department Chair at California State University, Sacramento, from 1994 to 2006. An IEEE Fellow recognized for contributions to entrepreneurship in engineering education, Ramesh has held prominent leadership roles, including 2022-23 President of ABET, 2021-22 ABET President-Elect, and 2016-17 Vice President of IEEE Educational Activities. He received the 2012 John Guarrera Engineering Educator of the Year Award, 2004 IEEE Region 6 Community Service Award, 2000 Person of the Year Award from the Sacramento Engineering and Technology Regional Consortium, and 2007 Distinguished Alumni Award from his alma mater. Under his guidance, the AIMS² program earned the 2021 UEDA Award of Excellence and 2021 Inspiring Programs in STEM from Insight Into Diversity. Ramesh has delivered invited presentations worldwide, chaired IEEE and ABET committees, hosted a 2014 White House STEM workshop, and contributed to the IEEE e-Learning Library Editorial Board. Key publications include the 2021 quasi-experimental design study report on AIMS², co-authored with Saxena, Durdella, and Carpenter.
