Sakae Hamakawa is a professor in the Faculty of Education at Tokoha University, serving in the School Education Course with a social studies emphasis. He earned his PhD in Literature from Kansai University. His academic background includes studies at Waseda University School of Education from 1984 to 1988, followed by graduate studies at Waseda University Graduate School of Letters, Arts and Sciences from 1989 to 1991 and 1992 to 1995. Prior to his current role, he taught at Waseda University Senior High School from 2007 to 2014 and held positions in the Teacher Training Course at Tokoha University Faculty of Education from 2014 to 2024. His research specializes in ancient Chinese history, with publications including a series of articles on anti-war thought in ancient Chinese Confucian texts such as the Shiji and Lienü Zhuan, as well as studies on excavated documents like the Yuelu Qin slips. He has authored or contributed to books including works on East Asian history, environmental history, and related topics. Hamakawa serves as president of the China Water History Research Association since 2021, as an editorial committee member for the China Excavated Materials Society since 2014, and held the position of vice president of the Japan Qin-Han History Society (East Japan branch) from 2022 to 2025. He has delivered lectures and presentations on topics such as ancient Chinese governance, disasters and recovery in Chinese history, and related subjects at academic conferences.
