Dr Salma Ali serves as a Lecturer in Rural Medicine in the School of Rural Medicine, Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of New England. Since 2016, she has been a lecturer and clinical skills tutor at the School of Medicine, contributing to the education of medical students through teaching and practical training. Additionally, she has been working as a General Practitioner at the Armidale Medical Centre since 2018, providing healthcare services in a rural setting.
Dr Ali's professional career includes prior experience as a Medical Resident in the Emergency Department at Sarat Abidah General Hospital in the Aseer Region, Saudi Arabia. She also served as a Medical Officer in the Emergency and Trauma Department at Omdurman Teaching Hospital in Khartoum, Sudan, and in the ENT and Surgery Department at the Chinese Friendship Hospital in Omdurman, Sudan. Her commitment to teaching has been acknowledged with the Clinical & Procedural Skill Tutor of the Year award from the University of New England Medical Student Association in 2018, and a nomination for the National Award for Excellence in Rural Education Teaching by the Australian Medical Student Association.
In community and professional engagement, Dr Ali has delivered guest lectures, including on her experiences providing health to the refugee community for the New England Division of General Practice in November 2020, and on Women in Medicine for the University of New England Medical Student Association in August 2017. She participates in the Indigenous school summer project at UNE, offering Aboriginal school students insights into medical student life. Dr Ali is a member of the Advisory Committee for the New England General Practice Research Network, the Multicultural Access Committee, and the Multicultural Women Group. She co-authored the publication 'The Prevalence of Helicobacter Pylori Treatment Resistance in Rural General Practice: A Retrospective Audit' in the Journal of Immigrant and Minority Health in 2026.
