Salome Charalambous is an Associate Professor at the University of the Witwatersrand. She earned her medical degree from the University of the Witwatersrand and holds MSc and PhD degrees in Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Her academic and professional work centers on epidemiology, with a focus on HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis implementation and control.
Charalambous serves as Group Chief Health Officer and Deputy Chief Scientific Officer at The Aurum Institute. She has led HIV program implementation efforts since 1998 and played a key role in the first large-scale antiretroviral therapy project among Anglo American companies from 2003 to 2007. As principal investigator, she has directed numerous cluster randomized and observational studies examining HIV and TB epidemiology and implementation in special populations, including miners, inmates, and TB contacts. She chairs the Monitoring and Evaluation working group of the South African National Department of Corrections Task Team, co-chairs a working group of the South African National TB Think Tank, and heads the Secretariat of the TB Think Tank. Charalambous also holds an adjunct professorship at Yale School of Public Health and has supervised students from various institutions.
