Shamsuddin’s career extends beyond traditional computer science education through his expertise in Malaysian Silat, a Southeast Asian martial art he has practiced for over 45 years. In 2005, he authored and published “The Malay Art of Self-Defense: Silat Seni Gayong” through North Atlantic Books, marking the first English-language book on Malaysian Silat. That same year, he pioneered the introduction of two Silat courses in College of DuPage’s Physical Education program, establishing COD as the only college in the nation offering such instruction. He founded the United States Gayong Federation, affiliated with organizations in Malaysia and Singapore, to promote Silat Seni Gayong. As Director of Wasit and Juri Development at the United States Sport Silat Association, he works to standardize judging and refereeing. Under his leadership and coaching, alongside assistants, COD’s Silat team competed successfully at the 2019 USA Pencak Silat National Championship, securing multiple medals and qualifying for international competition. Having emigrated from Malaysia in 1981 to pursue education in the United States, Shamsuddin integrates his cultural background into his teaching.
