About Sam

Sam West is a postdoctoral researcher in the Health Behaviours team at the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences, University of Oxford. He completed his PhD in 2023 with the Nutritional Physiology Research Group at the University of Exeter. His doctoral research centred on using isotopically labelled amino acids to assess how modulating dietary protein form influences postprandial skeletal muscle metabolism.

His current research focuses on understanding how lifestyle interventions including diet and exercise, alongside pharmaceutical approaches, can be used in the treatment and management of obesity and type 2 diabetes. This work has included investigations into low carbohydrate diets for improving glycaemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes and the mechanisms underlying any improvements. Recent publications include co-authored work on weight loss drugs in the BMJ in 2026 and a systematic review and meta-analysis on weight regain after cessation of medication for weight management, also published in the BMJ in 2026. Additional publications address topics such as high-protein plant-based versus omnivorous diets during resistance training and postprandial plasma amino acid responses to different dietary protein sources.
