Sandeep Gupta, M.D., serves as Professor of Pediatrics and Division Director of the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Heersink School of Medicine. He holds the David E. Dixon Endowed Chair in Pediatric Gastroenterology. Dr. Gupta earned his medical degree from the University of Ibadan in Ibadan, Nigeria. He completed his residency in pediatrics at the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington, Connecticut. His subspecialty training includes a fellowship in Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Northwestern University/Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Illinois, and a fellowship in Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition at Indiana University/James Whitcomb Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, Indiana. Prior to joining UAB in April 2023, Dr. Gupta was a Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Gastroenterology at Indiana University School of Medicine and Riley Hospital for Children, where he built a distinguished career over more than three decades in academic medicine and clinical practice.
At UAB and Children's of Alabama, Dr. Gupta leads the division with a focus on advancing pediatric gastroenterology, including long-standing clinical interests in eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders. He has been reappointed as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition (JPGN) and JPGN Reports for a five-year term through December 2030; these journals are co-owned by the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition (NASPGHAN) and the European Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition (ESPGHAN). In May 2023, he was elected Vice Chair of the Pediatric Gastroenterology and Developmental Biology section of the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA), serving through May 2025. Dr. Gupta also serves on UAB's Pediatric Appointment, Promotion, and Tenure Committee. These leadership roles highlight his significant influence in shaping research, education, and clinical standards in pediatric gastroenterology. Additionally, he contributes to institutional leadership through participation in the UAB Medicine Institute for Leadership.
