Sarah E. Born is a Professor of Nursing within the Health Sciences Division at College of DuPage, where she joined the faculty in 2014. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.S.N.) from Marquette University, a Master of Science in Nursing (M.S.N.) from Lewis University, and a Doctor of Nursing Practice (D.N.P.) from Duquesne University. Dr. Born's doctoral capstone, defended on December 3, 2021, is titled "Program Evaluation of the Rapid Response System Prior to and During a COVID Surge." This project conducted a program evaluation of the rapid response system (RRS) at a large Catholic academic Level 1 trauma health system with 547 beds, following recommendations from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement and The Joint Commission. RRS comprises recognition and alert (afferent limb), response and timely management (efferent limb), administrative support, and quality improvement monitoring. Using the W.K. Kellogg Step-by-Step Guide to Program Evaluation and descriptive statistics on retrospective quantitative data from FY2019 to FY2021, the evaluation compared RRS workflow, mortality rates, and non-ICU code blues pre- and during the COVID-19 surge. It revealed the RRS had not been reviewed since 2015-2017, underscoring the need for frequent assessments to enhance patient safety and outcomes in acute care settings.
At College of DuPage, Dr. Born serves students from her office in HSC 2207N, offering extensive office hours including Mondays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., and Thursdays from 12:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. She has held key administrative positions such as Interim Director of the nursing program and Nurse Administrator. Dr. Born advises the Student Nurses Association and contributes to advanced teaching through high-tech simulation labs in the Health Sciences Center. Previously an Associate Professor, she participated in the college's immersive virtual reality learning initiative, recognized as the 2022-2023 Innovation of the Year Award winner by the League for Innovation in the Community College. Her work emphasizes preparing students for nursing careers incorporating technology and clinical excellence.
