Dr Sarah Goodwin is a Senior Lecturer within Monash University's Department of Human Centred Computing, Faculty of Information Technology, where she is part of the Embodied Visualisation research group. She serves as Director of Engagement for the department and co-Director of Research for the Monash Grid Innovation Hub, and is a member of the Monash Energy Institute and Monash Data Futures Institute. With more than 20 years of experience in geospatial analysis and information visualisation across professional and academic roles—including GIS technician, geo-data analyst, consultant, and researcher at institutions such as the giCentre (City, University of London), g2Lab (HafenCity University, Hamburg), and RMIT University's Geospatial Science Department—Goodwin focuses on human-centric visual solutions for complex, multi-dimensional, and geospatial data to support sustainability.
Goodwin holds a PhD in Geographical Information Science (City, University of London, 2015), MSc in Geographical Information Systems (City, University of London, 2007), and BSc (Hons) in Geography (University of Manchester, 2003). Her research projects include visualising control rooms for the energy sector (with AEMO and CSIRO), Australia's Discourse Explorer (Paul Ramsay Foundation), Australian Cancer Atlas (Cancer Council Queensland), immersive tools for water quality and net zero transitions, Gazealytics software, MultiViz for urban diversity, and Uplift for smart grid data. Key publications are "A Framework for Creative Visualization-Opportunities Workshops" (2019, cited by 127), "Many-to-Many Geographically-Embedded Flow Visualisation: An Evaluation" (2017, 123 citations), and "Uplift: A Tangible and Immersive Tabletop System for Casual Collaborative Visual Analytics" (2021, 119 citations). She received the IEEE InfoVis Best Paper Honorable Mention (2016), co-chaired IEEE VIS 2023, runs EnergyVis and CityVis workshops, and teaches data visualisation to over 1000 students yearly while supervising PhD and postgraduate students.
