Dr. Satoshi Ogawa is an Associate Professor in the Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences at Monash University Malaysia. He obtained his BSc in Aquatic Biology from the Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology between 1996 and 2000, MSc in Aquatic Biotechnology from the University of Tokyo from 2000 to 2002, and PhD in System Physiology from Nippon Medical School, Japan, awarded in 2006. Joining Monash University Malaysia in 2006 as a Lecturer in the Brain Research Institute, School of Medicine and Health Sciences, he advanced to Senior Research Fellow in 2014 and Senior Lecturer in 2017. He currently serves as Associate Professor, Director of the Optical Imaging Platform, and Member for Malaysia on the Monash Neuroscience executive committee.
Ogawa's research investigates the neuro-molecular mechanisms of cognitive impairment and drug addiction, including social behaviour, neurobiology, addiction, learning, and memory. Utilizing zebrafish models, neuroimaging, and genetics, his expertise spans neuroscience, bioimaging, and molecular morphology. He has authored articles in high-impact journals such as PNAS and Endocrinology. Select publications include “Habenular kisspeptin modulates fear in the zebrafish” (PNAS, 2014), “Three GnRH receptor types in laser captured single cells of the cichlid pituitary display cellular and functional heterogeneity” (PNAS, 2005), “5,7,3′,4′,5′-pentamethoxyflavone (PMF) exhibits anti-obesity and neuroprotective effects in an obese zebrafish model” (Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology, 2025), and “Exploring β-caryophyllene: a non-psychotropic cannabinoid's potential in mitigating cognitive impairment induced by sleep deprivation” (Archives of Pharmacal Research, 2025). Having supervised 24 postgraduate students with 16 completions, Ogawa has earned awards such as the Jimmie Dodd Memorial Prize for Comparative Endocrinology, the 2016 Young Investigator Award from the Malaysian Society of Pharmacology and Physiology, and several Monash University Pro Vice-Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence in Research (2008, 2009, 2010, 2013).
