A master at fostering understanding.
Dr. Scott Abbott Paterson is an Associate Professor in Anatomy at the School of Anatomy, University of Bristol, Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, where he also serves as School Education Director. He holds a PhD, an MSc by Research, and a BSc with Honours. As an academic anatomist, his expertise centers on functional anatomy. His research specializations include anatomy education, biomedical visualization, inclusive education practices, digital technologies in teaching and learning, social media utilization by anatomists, juvenile osteology, and the anatomical considerations of sex and gender. Paterson has led eight research projects as principal investigator, contributing to advancements in representative research practices and technology integration in anatomy.
Paterson's contributions to teaching innovation are notable, particularly during the COVID-19 lockdown, where he co-authored the development of collaborative two-directional live streaming for hands-on dissection experiences, published as 'Collaborative, Two-Directional Live Streaming to Deliver Hands-on Dissection Experience during the COVID-19 Lockdown' (2023) in Biomedical Visualisation. Other key publications include 'Guided Anatomy: Embedding Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Teaching and Research at Bristol' (2025) and 'The Evolution, Implementation, and Impact of Representative Research Practices in Anatomy' (2025), both in Springer volumes on biomedical visualization. He has delivered guest lectures, such as 'The Anatomy of Sex and Gender' in 2021, and supports projects on queering anatomy and social media in the discipline. His teaching excellence earned nominations for the Bristol Teaching Award for Outstanding Teaching in 2018, 2019 (shortlisted), and 2020, along with nomination for National Teaching Fellowship. These efforts underscore his impact on fostering inclusive, accessible, and technologically advanced anatomy education.
