Scott Grant is a Lecturer in Chinese Studies in the School of Languages, Literatures, Cultures and Linguistics within the Faculty of Arts at Monash University. He has taught Chinese language and culture at the tertiary level for more than 20 years, coordinating and delivering courses from beginner to advanced levels. His pedagogical approach emphasizes innovative technology integration, particularly through immersive digital environments to enhance language acquisition.
Grant's research specializations center on second language acquisition in 3D virtual worlds, simulation and gaming for language learning, virtual reality applications, AI in education, and digital humanities, with a focus on Chinese language pedagogy. He created the Chinese Island immersive learning environment in Second Life and has explored cognitive engagement, self-efficacy beliefs, foreign language anxiety, and negotiation of meaning in virtual settings. Key publications include co-editing the volume Contextual Language Learning: Real Language Learning on the Continuum from Virtuality to Reality (Springer, 2021); The impact of Chinese language lessons in a virtual world on university students' self-efficacy beliefs (Australasian Journal of Educational Technology, 2012, with Lyn Henderson); Effects of different online modes on negotiation of meaning for beginning-level Chinese language learners (Educational Technology & Society, 2025, with Hui Huang and Jing Yan); 'How anxious I am': the effect of different online modalities on Chinese language learners’ foreign language anxiety (The Language Learning Journal, 2024); Pedagogical agent positioning in external videos improves English listening comprehension for Chinese university students (British Journal of Educational Technology, 2025, with others); and The use of virtual chatbots to support Chinese as a foreign language learners' communication skills through scaffolded self-directed learning (2025). He holds a Doctor of Philosophy and has contributed to numerous collaborative projects on virtual worlds in higher education, with his work cited over 850 times, demonstrating impact in technology-enhanced language education.
