Loy See Mey, PhD, is a Lecturer in the Department of Psychology within the Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences at Monash University Malaysia. She earned her Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), with a thesis entitled "Treatment Motivation among Malaysian Drug Addicts," for which she received the Excellent PhD Thesis Award and the Graduate on Time (GOT) Award from UKM's Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities. Prior to this, she obtained a Master of Education in Guidance and Counselling from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and a Bachelor of Social Science (Honours) in Psychology from Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR). As a registered and licensed counsellor with the Malaysian Board of Counsellors since 2013, Loy See Mey began her career as a university counsellor following her master's degree and subsequently held teaching positions in psychology and counselling courses before joining Monash University Malaysia.
Her primary research interests encompass early life exposure to violence and its subsequent developmental consequences, particularly focusing on childhood maltreatment experiences among drug addicts in Malaysia, as explored in her PhD research. Additional areas include end-of-life care and coping with loss, derived from her volunteer experience in palliative care, and childhood maltreatment and criminal attitudes among Malaysian juvenile delinquents. She has contributed to several peer-reviewed publications, including "The mediating role of forgiveness and self-efficacy in the relationship between childhood maltreatment and treatment motivation among Malaysian male drug addicts" published in Frontiers in Psychology in 2022; "The dynamic role of green technological innovation, financial development and trade openness on urban environmental degradation in China: Fresh insights from carbon efficiency" in Urban Climate in 2023; "Does fintech really matter for energy, economy and environment? From the lenses of SDG-7, SDG-8, SDG-13, COP27 and COP28" in Resources Policy in 2024; "Kaunseling Penyalahgunaan Bahan: Substance Abuse in Counseling" in 2024; and "Exploring the psychometric properties of the Malay Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short form among juvenile delinquents in Malaysia" in the Journal of Criminological Research, Policy and Practice in 2025. Loy See Mey is the Principal Investigator for the 2023 Monash University School Seed Grant-funded project "Childhood Maltreatment and Criminal Attitudes among Malaysian Juvenile Delinquents" (RM 29,880) and serves as a Chief Investigator on the longitudinal study "Establishing a pathway theory between obesity and mental health through a longitudinal study among adolescents in Malaysia" (2023-2026).
