Professor Shah Yasin serves as Professor and Head of the Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences at Monash University Malaysia. He joined the institution full-time in October 2005. Before that, he was the Chief Medical Officer for Malaysia's largest private general practice group, managing over 100 doctors and spearheading quality improvement initiatives and practice audits. From 1996 to 1999, he lectured in the Department of Community Medicine and General Practice at Monash University's Clayton campus in Victoria, Australia, with a focus on primary care research and clinical epidemiology. Earlier, between 1988 and 1996, he chaired the Vocational Training Program of the Academy of Family Physicians in Malaysia, successfully converting it into a distance learning format. Additionally, Professor Yasin is the Director of the South East Asia Community Observatory (SEACO), an internationally funded project implementing a demographic and health surveillance system in Segamat, Johor, Malaysia.
His academic interests encompass medical education, chronic disease management, and health systems research. Since 2011, he has produced 25 research outputs, comprising 18 articles, 3 book chapters, 3 review articles, and 1 letter. Key publications include "Caregiver burden among dementia caregivers in low-and middle-income countries in Asia: a systematic review" published in Aging and Mental Health in 2025; "Assessing Sodium Intake in Middle-Aged and Older Adults with Elevated Blood Pressure: Validation of Spot Urine Excretion and Dietary Survey-Derived Estimates" in Nutrients in 2024; "Dietary intake, obesity, and metabolic risk factors among children and adolescents in the SEACO-CH20 cross-sectional study" in Scientific Reports in 2024; and "Predicting higher child BMI z-score and obesity incidence in Malaysia: a longitudinal analysis of a dynamic cohort study" in BMC Public Health in 2024. His research aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being. Professor Yasin supervises higher degree research students in these domains and has contributed to projects like "The Global Classroom: Learning without Borders" from 2021 to 2023 and "Innovating Behaviour and Health Surveillance for Cardiovascular Diseases Prevention in Malaysia" from 2020 to 2022.
