Shane Bendele is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering in the Engineering Technologies department at Columbus State Community College. He holds an Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree from Lima Technical College, a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) from Ohio Northern University, and a Master of Arts (M.A.) from The Ohio State University. Bendele has served the college for 30 years, earning recognition for his long-term commitment in 2024. Throughout his tenure, he has focused on delivering engineering education that bridges classroom learning with industry demands in mechanical engineering technology.
In his role, Bendele prioritizes practical, hands-on instruction that prepares students for immediate workforce success. He has shared that one of his most rewarding experiences is receiving feedback from former students who, after six months in the field, affirm that they apply everything taught in his classes. Bendele has made significant contributions to open educational resources by authoring the textbook 'MECH-1240 Machine Tools' specifically for Columbus State Community College's MECH-1240 course. This comprehensive OER delves into foundational machining and chip-making industry topics, emphasizing safety practices, measurement fundamentals using micrometers and calipers, core machining operations such as turning, milling, grinding, cutoff processes, hole-making, and threading. It also covers material properties, cutting tool geometry, and associated bench practices, providing students with essential knowledge for mechanical engineering technology careers. His work supports accessible, high-quality education in engineering at the community college level.
