Shane R. Jimerson is a Professor in the Department of Counseling, Clinical, and School Psychology at the University of California, Santa Barbara's Gevirtz Graduate School of Education, specializing in school psychology within the Psychology faculty. He earned a B.A. in Psychology with a minor in Education from the University of California, Berkeley in 1992, an M.A. in Child Development in 1994, and a Ph.D. in School Psychology and Child Development from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities in 1997. Joining the UCSB faculty in 1997, Jimerson has advanced through roles including Associate Dean for Research and Director of the Research Office at the Gevirtz School, Department Chair of Counseling, Clinical, and School Psychology, and currently serves as Professor and Director of Academic Program Development. He is a Nationally Certified School Psychologist, credentialed in the State of California, and recognized as a Board Certified Expert and Diplomat in Traumatic Stress by the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress, specializing in children, families, and schools.
Jimerson's research focuses on school psychology, including early intervention and prevention, school violence and safety, school dropouts, reading education, safety education, educational psychology and measurement, elementary education, and behavioral and social development. He has authored or co-authored over 30 books and more than 400 publications and presentations. Key works include School Safety and Violence Prevention: Science, Practice, and Policy (2019), Handbook of School Violence and School Safety: International Research and Practice (2nd ed., 2012), The Handbook of Bullying in Schools: An International Perspective (2010), The Handbook of International School Psychology (2007), and the PREPaRE model series on school crisis prevention. As Editor-in-Chief of School Psychology Review and Senior Editor of School Psychology International, he shapes the field. His leadership includes serving as President of the Society for the Study of School Psychology (2019-2021), International School Psychology Association (2013-2018), and APA Division 16 School Psychology (2012). Awards encompass the APA Division 16 Senior Scientist Award (2022), California Association of School Psychologists Lifetime Achievement Award (2021), Trainers of School Psychologists Outstanding Trainer Award (2020), and honorary doctorates from the University of Liege (2022) and National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. Jimerson's contributions advance science, practice, policy, and training in school psychology internationally.
