Sharyn Livy is an Associate Professor of mathematics education in the School of Curriculum, Teaching and Inclusive Education within the Faculty of Education at Monash University. Prior to her academic appointment, she worked as a numeracy consultant with the Mathematical Association of Victoria. She has progressed through lecturer and senior lecturer positions at Monash University. In recognition of her excellence in teaching and support for student learning, Livy achieved Senior Fellow status of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA). Additionally, in 2017, she received an award from the Australian Teacher Education Association for her contributions to pre-service teacher education and co-teaching practices with primary teachers.
Livy's research centers on primary mathematics education, with key interests in teachers' knowledge for teaching mathematics, the use of rich and challenging tasks, students' geometric reasoning, and integrating children's literature into mathematical learning. Her scholarship is evidenced by over 1,500 citations on Google Scholar. Notable publications include the book Maths Sequences for the Early Years F-2: Challenging Children to Reason Mathematically (2019, co-authored with Peter Sullivan, Janette Bobis, Ann Downton, and Melody McCormick); Insights into students' geometric reasoning relating to prisms (with Ann Downton); Picturebooks and mathematical learning in early years classrooms: a story from an Australian classroom (with Tracey Muir); Developing primary pre-service teachers' mathematical content knowledge during practicum teaching (with Colleen Vale and Sandra Herbert, 2016); and Optimizing learning conditions for self-determination in primary mathematics education: a theoretical perspective (with Jane Hubbard, James Russo, and Peter Sullivan, 2025). She has led international research projects published in journals such as the Journal of Mathematics Teacher Education. Livy contributes to teacher professional learning through workshops like 'Unlocking the Curriculum: Practical Strategies for Mathematics Teaching' and serves on the Board of Directors of the Mathematical Association of Victoria. Her work influences practices in early years and primary mathematics teaching and assessment.
