Shashi Chandra is a PhD student in the Department of Public Health at the University of Otago, Wellington. Affiliated with the Health Promotion and Policy Research Unit (HePPRU), Chandra's research focuses on public health interventions for chronic disease management. His doctoral thesis, entitled 'Enhancing diabetes self-management in South Asian (Indian) population in New Zealand: A mixed method study with patients and health care providers,' employs a mixed-methods approach to explore barriers and facilitators to effective diabetes self-management among South Asian communities. This work is supervised by Moira Smith and Louise Signal, both from the Department of Public Health.
Chandra is also listed among postgraduate students in the Edgar Diabetes and Obesity Research (EDOR) at the University of Otago, underscoring his involvement in diabetes-related research. As a physician and holder of a Master's in Public Health, he brings clinical and public health expertise to his doctoral studies. His professional background includes roles in public health organizations such as Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora, where he contributes to harnessing data and evidence for population health improvements. Chandra received the International Ford Foundation Fellowship Award for Leadership in Health to pursue his Master's degree.
