Simbarashe Mawere serves as an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Cape Town. He is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Computer Science at the University of Cape Town. Mawere previously completed an Honours Bachelor of Science in Computer Science at the same institution.
His research focuses on natural language processing with emphasis on African languages. Mawere contributed to the development of MzansiLM, a multilingual AI language model trained on South Africa’s 11 official languages. He has also worked on projects involving morphological parsing using deep learning techniques. Mawere has received academic recognition including multiple appearances on the Dean’s Merit List at the University of Cape Town, the Twamley December Scholarship, the Science Faculty Scholarship, and other merit-based awards.
