About Simon

Professor Simon Bronitt holds an LLB from the University of Bristol and an LLM from the University of Cambridge. He is Professor of Law at the University of Sydney Law School, where he joined in 2019 as Head of School and Dean, serving in that leadership role from 2019 to 2024. Prior to Sydney, Professor Bronitt held professorial appointments at the University of Queensland, including as Deputy Head of School and Deputy Dean (Research) in the TC Beirne School of Law, and at Griffith University, where he directed the ARC Centre of Excellence in Policing and Security. Over the past three decades, he has contributed extensively to legal scholarship, policy analysis, and education in criminal justice.

Professor Bronitt's research specializations encompass criminal law, criminal justice, criminology, criminal evidence and procedure, policing, human rights law, and law and technology. He employs comparative and interdisciplinary approaches in his work. Key publications include the co-authored textbook Principles of Criminal Law with Bernadette McSherry (third edition), and articles such as Rape Law in Context: Contesting the Scales of Injustice (2018). His scholarship has garnered over 1,500 citations on Google Scholar. In 2021, Professor Bronitt was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Law. He teaches in the LLB and JD programs, including Criminal Law II and Ngara – Foundations of Australian Law.
