Associate Professor Simone Murray holds the position of Associate Professor in Literary Studies at Monash University in the Faculty of Arts. She earned a Bachelor of Arts from The University of Queensland in 1992, first-class Honours in English from the same university in 1994, and a PhD in English Language and Literature from University College London in 1999, with a thesis examining the contemporary UK book publishing industry and its role in mainstreaming feminist ideas. Upon returning to Australia, she worked in academic publishing before securing an Australian Research Council Postdoctoral Fellowship in the School of English, Media Studies and Art History at The University of Queensland from 2001 to 2003. She then held a lectureship in the School of English, Art History, Film and Media at The University of Sydney in 2004. Joining Monash University in 2005 with a continuing lectureship in the Communications and Media Studies program, she was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2008 and served as Director of Monash University’s Centre for the Book from mid-2009 until 2011. Further promotions included Senior Lecturer in Literary Studies in 2014 and Associate Professor in Literary Studies from the beginning of 2017.
Murray’s expertise spans literary studies, media and communication studies, and gender theory, with active research in print culture, publishing studies and book history; digital literary studies, literary media studies and the digital humanities; cross-media adaptation; and women’s writing and feminist literary theory. Her key publications include The Digital Future of English: Literary Media Studies (Oxford University Press, 2025), The Digital Literary Sphere: Reading, Writing, and Selling Books in the Internet Era (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2018), The Adaptation Industry: The Cultural Economy of Contemporary Literary Adaptation (Routledge, 2012), Mixed Media: Feminist Presses and Publishing Politics (Edinburgh University Press, 2004, winner of the 2005 SHARP DeLong Book Prize), and An Introduction to Contemporary Print Culture (2020). As Primary Chief Investigator, she led Australian Research Council projects on Performing Authorship in the Digital Literary Sphere (2012-2017) and Books as Media: The Cultural Economy of Literary Adaptation (2007-2009). Her honors include election as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities in 2019, second prize in the N. Katherine Hayles Award for Criticism of Electronic Literature in 2019, the International Award for Excellence in the Development of the Book in 2006, and the University Medal in English from The University of Queensland in 1995. She accepts PhD students and has supervised several successful higher degree completions, contributing to UN Sustainable Development Goals 5 (Gender Equality) and 13 (Climate Action).
